Desktop Metal 3D printers: the Studio and the Production

Up until recently, metal additive manufacturing systems were huge, expensive, industrial machines that required quite an extensive 3D printing knowledge base. This is changing thanks to various metal 3D printing startups, especially US-based Desktop Metal.

Desktop Metal Studio – an affordable desktop metal 3D printer

Desktop Metal has revolutionized metal 3D printing by squeezing it into a workshop-friendly desktop 3D printer at a much lower cost than usual; some industrial metal 3D printers are priced at over one million dollars!

The Studio’s $120,000 price tag makes it affordable for small and medium-sized businesses that frequently need high-quality metal prototypes. Furthermore, that price includes all the elements necessary to obtain a final part:

  • the Studio desktop metal 3D printer,
  • a debinder,
  • and a sintering furnace.

Desktop Metal Production – tough competition for traditional manufacturing methods

This Desktop Metal 3D printer is pricier than the Studio, but with reason. Claimed to be 100 times faster than other manufacturing methods and 20 times cheaper than other metal 3D printing systems, the Production is truly competitive.

Indeed, Desktop Metal’s SPJ (Single Pass Jetting) 3D printing technology enables the Production system to 3D print up to 8200 cm3 per hour. This makes the Desktop Metal Production fit for high-quality production series, more so with its 50 micron resolution.
