Makerbot unveils two new desktop 3D printers: the Makerbot Replicator+ and the Replicator Mini+

Makerbot, a Stratasys brand, has announced yesterday the launch of two new versions of their famous Replicator desktop 3D printers. The famous 3D printer manufacturer from Brooklyn, USA has unveiled the Makerbot Replicator+ and the Makerbot Replicator Mini+. This is the 6th Generation of the famous Replicator line.

Those two desktop 3D printers offer several upgrades compared to the previous models. Let’s review some of the most interesting features announced.

Both the MakerBot Replicator+ Mini+ support the new version of MakerBot Mobile, a mobile app which includes a Guided Setup feature. The Guided Setup walks the user through the entire 3D printer process, step by step. The new MakerBot Print software now supports several CAD files, including MakerBot (.makerbot), STL (.stl), SolidWorks (.sldprt, .sldasm), InventorOBJ (.ipt, .iam), IGES (.iges, .igs), STEP AP203/214 (.step, .stp), CATIA (.CATPart, .CATProduct), Wavefront Object (.obj), Unigraphics/NX (.prt), Solid Edge (.par, .asm), ProE/Creo (.prt, .prt., .asm, .asm.), VRML (.wrl) and Parasolid (.x_t, .x_b).

Both Replicator+ and Replicator Mini+ offer a built-in camera (640 x 480 pixels resolution), to easily monitor 3D prints. With their newly developed build surface called “Grip Surface”, adhesive tape is no longer needed for 3D printing. The 3D printing beds of these 3D printers are factory-leveled for a real out-of-the-box experience (we’ll wait until we can test this feature to confirm if it’s a good idea!).

The MakerBot Replicator+ is 30% faster, has a 25% larger build volume, and is 27% quieter than its predecessor.

The MakerBot Replicator+ only 3D prints PLA. For this 3D printer, Makerbot also launched a Slate Gray Tough PLA Filament Bundle ($379) that is designed to allow professionals to create durable, high-impact strength prototypes and fixtures. This bundle consists of three spools of MakerBot Tough PLA Filament in slate gray bundled with the MakerBot Tough PLA Smart Extruder+. The MakerBot Tough PLA combines the best characteristics of PLA and ABS filament: tough as ABS with similar tensile, compressive, and flexural strength. It 3D prints with the ease and reliability of PLA. This bundle is also compatible with the Makerbot Replicator (5th Generation).

The MakerBot Replicator+ has a MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) of $2,499. MakerBot is offering the MakerBot Replicator+ at $1,999 until October 31, 2016.
