Price and review of DAVID SLS 3D scanners

DAVID Vision Systems GmbH, is a company specialized in 3D scanners located in Germany. DAVID was founded in 2009 as a spin-off company of the Institute for Robotics and Process Control at TU-Braunschweig.

The company offers an affordable and yet very capable line of products. After the DAVID SLS-1 and DAVID SLS-2 the company introduced in late 2015 their latest product called the DAVID SLS-3. This model is faster (almost twice as much compared to the SLS-2) and also a little bit more precise.

For most use cases this 3D scanner is one of the best price to performance ratio on the market. They can be used for a lot of different uses cases: architecture, jewelry, dental, body scan, 3D figurines, museum cultural heritage and engineering applications.

The SLS 3D scanners use the structured light technology. A patterned image is casted by a projector on the surface to scan. A camera captures the deformation of the pattern and the DAVID software is able to deduce the topology of the 3D surface and creates a 3D mesh.

Because of this technology the setup and calibration might be a bit long but the overall performance of the machine counterbalances theses setbacks.

If you are on a small budget David also offer a much cheaper alternative for low cost 3D scanning called the DAVID LaserScanner Starter Kit.
