Optomec LENS 850-R review
The LENS 850-R is an industrial 3D printer made by Optomec, a manufacturer based in Albuquerque, USA. The Optomec LENS 850-R features a large build size of 900 x 1500 x 900 mm.
Optomec LENS 850-R 3D printing technology
The LENS 850-R uses LENS 3D printing technology to build metal parts. This technology uses a high-power laser (500W to 4kW) to fuse metal powder into full-density 3D structures.
The LENS process takes place in a closed 3D printing build chamber which is purged with argon so that the oxygen and moisture levels stay very low (<10 ppm). This keeps the part clean and prevents oxidation. The metal powder feedstock is delivered to the material deposition head by Optomec’s proprietary powder-feed system. Once a single layer has been deposited, the material deposition head moves on to the next layer. This process is repeated until the whole part is constructed. When complete, the component is removed and can be heat-treated, hot-isostatic-pressed, machined, or finished to best suit the final application.
This industrial 3D printer can also precisely add 3D material to repair damaged areas. The LENS 850-R is able to work with various metals and alloys.
