MarkForged Metal X review
The MarkForged Metal X is a professional metal 3D printer made by MarkForged, a manufacturer based in the US. This metal 3D printer offers an enclosed and heated build chamber.
For quality control, the MarkForged Metal X integrates a 3D scanning unit capable of reaching 1-micron measurement accuracy and 50-micron 3D scanning resolution.
MarkForged Metal X 3D printing technology
ADAM (ATOMIC DIFFUSION ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING)
MarkForged developed a proprietary 3D printing technology called ADAM (Atomic Diffusion Additive Manufacturing). This metal printing process is based on the extrusion technology. The ADAM 3D printing process creates 3D parts using metal powder embedded inside a special filament, which also bears wax and polymers. A heating module allows the removal of the plastic and the sintering of the metal powder into a strong and dense part that is 97% metal.
MarkForged describes ADAM as “an end-to-end process that starts with metal powder, captures it in a plastic binder and then forms it into the part shape, one layer at a time”. The ADAM metal 3D printing process is cost-effective and allows the Mark X to churn out high-quality metal parts.
MarkForged Metal X 3D printing materials
The MarkForged Metal X’s default metal 3D printing material is l 17-4 PH stainless steel. Other compatible materials also include tooling steel, Titanium, Inconel, pure copper, and aluminum.
Markforged Metal X vs Desktop Metal
In March 2017, metal 3D printer startup Desktop Metal filed a lawsuit against MarkForged for several patent infringements and other trade violations. MarkForged was then cleared of IP infringement in a trial and both companies reached an agreement in October 2018 regarding all outstanding issues between the two metal 3D printing giants.
