High-performance polymers for AM
High-performance polymers like PEEK and PEI are resistant to extreme temperatures, making them suitable for use in sectors like aerospace and energy. But the temperature resistance of these high-performance plastics also makes them difficult to melt and extrude in a 3D printer.
The solution is high-temperature 3D printing. High-temp FFF printers typically have all-metal hotend extruders that heat up to at least 450°C, in addition to high-temperature print beds and chambers to ensure adhesion and uniform heat distribution. Because of these advanced features, industrial high-performance machines cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.
