Diogo Quental, Raise3D CEO, on the importance of flexible manufacturing
Hi Diogo, thanks for taking the time to talk to us. Can you tell me a little about what inspired Raise3D to design the Pro2 series?
Traditional manufacturing arose from the need to produce on a mass scale to satisfy a rapidly growing demand. Fast forward decades later and the rising demand is still there except consumers have become more demanding.
At a time where individual expression is paramount, traditional manufacturing is no longer in phase with consumer expectations. This new demand for exclusive and original products is the engine driving flexible manufacturing forward.
3D print houses are leading this movement so for the Pro2 series, we asked ourselves, how can we help them be even more competitive.
What makes flexible manufacturing so important today?
There is a rapid change in consumers’ preferences and mass production is increasingly out of touch with this reality. In Sculpteo’s The State of 3D Printing – Edition 2017 for example, their findings pointed to “offering customized product and limited series” and “increasing production flexibility” as top priorities.
Additive manufacturing technology is one of the most, if not the only, viable solution to this challenge. At this point, the advantages of 3D printing are well known. They reduce the cost of capital expenditure, of prototyping and maintenance as well as materials. At the same time, they also speed up the production setup and production thereafter.
The goal is being able to produce small, customized batches at a profit and being able to scale production easily.
So what makes the Pro2 series special then?
Make and 3D Hubs consider our N2 printers among the best but there is still room for improvement. The Pro2 series can run continuously and with high reliability, allowing manufacturers to produce small batches at a low cost.
We did this by carrying out a full revision of our N2 series. We identified industrial-grade components, such as the new dual extruders or 32-bit motion controller, and designed the best 3D printer we could.
The result is the Pro2 Series, which includes a 7” touchscreen, wireless printing and controls with an integrated webcam along with the possibility to print with a wide range of materials thanks to a hot-end reaching temperatures of up to 300 degrees and a heated build plate made of aerospace grade aluminium.
These components, as a whole, allow for short runs that are easy to manage at a stable and low cost. All of these features will help not only professionals and small businesses but also corporations who want to implement a Flexible Manufacturing system.
